Subject: Don: Hello from Stanford!!!!!
Hello family!! This is Don and I thought I'd give you a test on e-mail. If you get this, you are doing great.
It's been an exciting few days. Last night, we met each other and most of the staff. Everybody's real cool.
Today was basically orientation. We got badged around 7:30 so we could go on base. Then we had breakfast (not bad) at the cafeteria. After that, we went through intros (to academy, RAs, PIs, etc). Around 9:30, we got to see an E30 (or U2?) take off -that's a vertical plane that goes way up. Then more orientation. Then we got some what of a tour of Ames. Ames is rather big - about the size of Malmstrom. We got into a big 80 x 120 wind tunnel. Then we got to see and go in the VMS (Vertical Motion Simulator) - that's the thing the shuttle astronauts practice landing in. Then we went to lunch. Saw some planes that the astronauts were using - some were here today using the VMS. THen we got the 2 hour safety lecture. Then we met with our PIs. Mine want me to help him with the computer stuff.
Great day -so far. Right now, we have a break before a 7-9 discussion session. Then whatever. May call ya sometime, but this is cheaper. I'm in the French House (Stanford) trying to check my NASA e-mail. Hopefully check that tomorow on base or hear. Hope all's well in the Falls. Take care. Hot day in Palo Alto and Moffet Field. Better keep going. See yas.
